tempted was the first song i composed at the university of richmond in 1993. originally written for typhoid mary, a grunge band i had joined, it was later recorded in 1994 by 9davine, a soul music quartet i founded. the version here is a remix from 2007 that i’ll feature on my forthcoming record (likely as the lead track). ill-fatedly, i decided to perform this remix “american idol style” at the 2007 capital star finals – and it cost me the grand prize. i felt as though the judges wanted to see if i could carry a solo without my guitar in front of me and just the instrumental tracks playing behind me. nope. it was a flop and i fell to third prize. you live and you learn!

tempted
coming home to you
never felt so good
how can it be that i’m back again
after all that’s been said?
tempted by the past
just another mistake
tempted by my luck
she is a snake
caught up in confusion
decisions cloud the mind
i’m staring at my future
but it’s hard to find
how could it be that i’m back again
after all that’s been said?
a question i heard her yell last night
a question i heard her whisper last year
somehow i’ve fallen on my own little eden
and i feel the need to get the hell outta here
tempted by misfortune
baby i’ve fallen on some tough times
tempted by a way out
been convicted of too many crimes
but every time i bite her apple
the poison makes me senseless
victim of human nature
i’m living life defenseless
how could it be that i’m back again
after all that’s been said?
a question i heard her yell last night
a question i heard her whisper last year
somehow i’ve fallen on my own little eden
and i feel the need to get the hell outta here
never thought that i’d be tempted by her fruit
but i’m finally insane
never thought that my luck would run dry
but now i’m praying for rain…
how could it be that i’m back again
after all that’s been said?
a question i heard her yell last night
a question i heard her whisper last year
i need to get the hell outta here
