Sublimation

sublimation was one of six tracks on the butterfly experiment – a conceptual ep i produced in the mid 90s. nearly all of the songs on the record spoke of love and relationships in terms of how they relate to various states of matter. smothered, melt, condense, frozen, evaporate are the other songs – some of which will be remixed for my next record. the chorus harmonies are definitely influenced by prince, one of the more under-rated singers and composers of the last 100 years. the solo is one of many melodic lead guitar parts i’ve recorded over the years. I don’t like busy solos. i like those you can hum fairly easily.

sublimation

maybe we got swept up
in a state of sublimation
spirits left our bodies behind
maybe what is left is in
a state of decimation
never to be solidified

all places seem the same
all faces bear no name
since i left my love
i can’t rise above
say a prayer
weigh the air
full of distances
i can’t share
cannot compare
all the instances
i hate explaining eccentric id
to those who’ll never know me
the way she did

maybe we got swept up
in a state of sublimation
spirits left our bodies behind
maybe what is left is in
a state of decimation
never to be solidified

all thoughts seem self-absorbed
all instincts self-adored
since i left her arms
there is no calm
say goodbye
to the lie
of a present tense
i cannot spare
cannot repair
half my common sense
i hate retaining a hint of regret
as the voices continue to beset

maybe we got swept up
in a state of sublimation
spirits left our bodies behind
maybe what is left is in
a state of decimation
never to be solidified

guitar…
cry
